Itanagar: Man arrested who duped a woman by selling a fake gold statue of Jesus

Itanagar capital police arrested a man who duped a woman by selling a a fake gold statue of Jesus, which was actually made of brass and not gold.

One Sariful Islam, aged 30 years, resident of North Lakhimpur district, Assam who posed himself as Ali has been arrested by the Arunachal Pradesh Police along gold plated statue of Jesus Christ weighing 1.8 kg from Banderdewa at around 3 pm on Sunday, informed Police.

SP Capital Complex, Tumme Amo informed that one Yadang w/o Tassar Tapak of Pachin Colony, Naharlagun on September 4 reported at Banderdewa PS that she had been duped by one person called Ali (Sariful Islam) with fake gold statue of Jesus.

“She alleged that she had received a call in July 2019 from mobile No-600182881 who introduced himself as Ali telling her that he had found a gold statue of Jesus Christ during digging of well at Itanagar and he had taken it to Laluk in Assam and kept it hidden. He then asked her to come to Laluk if she wanted to verify it and buy,” informed SP.

SP further stated that on repeated calls Yadang got convinced and in the last week of July 2019, she went to Lakhimpur and met Ali.

“Both went to one village near Bangalmara, where Ali showed her the Statue and gave her a small piece from that statue to check its quality. The complainant then brought the piece and gets it checked by a renowned jeweller at Naharlagun, who informed her that it was a pure gold. Thus so convinced, the complainant contacted Ali to come over to Banderdewa with the statue. Accordingly, Ali brought the statue and met the lady at Banderdewa in third week of August 2019. The lady bought the statue weighing 2.3 kgs for Rs. 60,000/. The statue was later examined and found that it was made of brass and not gold,” added SP.

He informed that in the past many years such complaints have been surfacing in social media and many persons including some rich persons, mostly ladies have been duped and looted lakhs of rupees. He added even some engineers of the ranks of EE have also been cheated in this manner.

Taking serious note of such cases of fraud and cheating frequently taking place, the SP Capital constituted a team comprising of SI R. K Jha, OC PS Banderdewa, ASI Gohain,  HC I. Basar, HC N. Tada, HC R. K Barua and Hc S.K Jha under the supervision of  SDPO Naharlagun and planned to trap him red handed.

SP informed that the police team trapped Ali with the help of the complainant.

He informed that the complaint was made to call Mr Ali again if he had any more such statues so that she could buy again. “Ali responded positively and on her request, he readily agreed to come to Banderdewa with the statue to sell it at Rs 1 00,000/ this time. When he arrived at Banderdewa on Sunday, the police waiting in ambush trapped and apprehended him,” informed Amo.

He informed that one mobile handset bearing the same SIM No-6001828813 has also been seized from the accused.

The accused was produced before the Court today and has been remanded in police custody for 2 days.

SP informed that he is being interrogated to ascertain of others involvement.

Meanwhile, he advised the people to be vigilant and not to believe such calls and become easy victims of such cheatings and frauds.
