The strategically important border road, Balipara-Charduar-Tawang (BCT) road, considered to be the lifeline of three districts of East Kameng, West Kameng and Tawang, was today closed for a week for all vehicular traffic due to heavy rain-triggered massive fresh landslides near Sessa this morning.
“On reports of fresh massive landslides near Sessa this morning, the West Kameng District Magistrate Dr Sonal Swaroop has ordered for complete closed of the BCT road for all type of traffic with effect from June 18 to 24 as the present weather and road conditions could pose threat to the life and safety of the commuters,” said an official communique here.
While informing that the information regarding the closure of BCT road has been communicated to the Deputy Commissioners of neighbouring East Kameng, Tawang and Sonitpur (Assam) districts, it said, the BRTF authority has been directed to ensure restoration of the BCT road on utmost priority.
It further stated that people intending to travel to West Kameng and Tawang can opt for the newly constructed two-lane all-weather road, Orang-Kalaktang-Shergaon-Rupa-Tenga (OKSRT) road.
Earlier, the DM, West Kameng had issued a prohibitory order calling for total closure of the BCT road for all vehicular traffic from June 15 to 17 following massive landslides at multiple locations on June 14 last due to incessant rain in the district.
Meanwhile, the official sources in the worst affected West Kameng district have confirmed sufficient stock of food grains but bit low in case of LPG cylinders. The lone petrol depot at district headquarters, Bomdila has downed its shutter for the time being but is expecting replenishment of POL items in a day or two, sources added.
