The “World Fish Migration Day” (WFMD) under the theme of “CONNECTING FISH, RIVERS AND PEOPLE” celebrated in Sonajuli of Arunachal Pradesh.
On this occasion a one-day event to create awareness on the importance of open rivers and migratory fish species was conducted at Papum Pare Eco-Agro project and Tea estate, Sonajuli today.
The one-day event was organised by the All India Game Fishing Association (AIGFA), in collaboration with Nature Unlimited, a local NGO with an aim to create awareness on the importance of open rivers and migratory fish and fish angling sports in the grass root level.
Concentrating on the two species of Golden and Chocolate Mahaseer, once most commonly found fish in the state, AIGFA in-charge Arunachal Pradesh, Abu Tayeng stressed on the rapid decrease in the population of the Mahaseer species and urged people to save the fishes on the verge of extinction to balance ecological system before it is too late to take action.
While encouraging the young participants for the fish angling sports, Tayeng pointed out the importance of angling methods such as longlining or trolling. Catch and release fishing practised in many parts of the world, size limits apply to certain species, meaning fish below and/or above a certain size must, by law, be released, Tayeng said.
Total 15 children and parent participated in the day-long event, taking active parts in the drawing competition and sports fishing. Wherein, all the participants were given an educational tour of the Papum Pare Tea estate also known for its Eco-Agro project by the owner, Tana Nikam Tara a PWD Executive Engineer (EE) on the Eco-Agroconceptual cultivation.
Earlier, Forest Officer Joram Rupa briefed on the method of preserving the Golden and Chocolate Mahaseer and their impact on the ecological system.
