Arunachal:  Farmers’ Field Day on Finger Millet Variety-GPU-67 held at Ruksin

RUKSIN-  A Farmer’s Field Day on “Improved variety of Finger Millet-GPU 67” was organized in the farmer field of  Taker Panyang, Mikong village of Ruksin block of East Siang District, Arunachal Pradesh on 17th November 2023 under the project Millets NEH programme of MTTC of  College of Agriculture, (CAU-Imphal), Pasighat which is sponsored by ICAR-Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad.

The main objective of the programme was to encourage the farmers to involve in millets farming using improved or high yielding varieties which was a major bottleneck in reduction in millets cultivation in the region and poor acceptance for consumption due to its dark colour of local land races.

A 60 year old farmer Taker Panyang, a was cultivated finger millet variety of GPU-67 for the first time in his field this year by replacing Rice in an area of 3acres, which is generally cultivated from the years and he is expecting 30quintals of yield out of it.

He also mentioned, finger millet (Mirung in Adi Language) is grown only in his father times, later unavailability of quality seeds and market, he didn’t tried all these years.

The same has been expressed by the farmers participated. Altogether, 40 farmers (15 men and 25 women) from the different villages participated in the programme.

The programme was addressed by the Dr.A.K. Tripathi, Dean, and PI Dr. Premaradhya, N., Assist. Professor of Agronomy in the field day Programme from the College.
