President’s rule imposed in Arunachal Pradesh

President Pranab Mukherjee has given assent to imposition of President’s rule in Arunachal Pradesh. The Union Cabinet on Sunday had recommended President’s rule in Arunachal Pradesh and it was sent to Pranab Mukherjee for his approval.
However the opposition strongly opposed the decision and Congress moved the Supreme Court challenging its constitutional validity of it. The matter has been posted for urgent hearing on January 27.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday met President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan to apprise him of the decision of the Union Cabinet to recommend imposition of central rule in Arunachal Pradesh.
In a related development, a Congress delegation also met President Mukherjee to convey him of the ‘onslaught’ by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to destabilise border-states, especially Arunachal Pradesh.
Congress party, which has 47 MLAs in the 60-member assembly, suffered a jolt when 21 of them rebelled. Eleven BJP MLAs backed the rebels in the bid to upstage the Nabam Tuki government. Later, 14 rebel Congress MLAs were disqualified.
The Governor then advanced the assembly session and convened it on December 16 in which Deputy Speaker revoked disqualification of 14 rebel Congress MLAs and removed Rebia from the post of Speaker. This sitting was held in a community hall in Itanagar.
Various decisions of the Governor and the Deputy Speaker were challenged by Rebia in Gauhati High Court which passed an interim order, keeping in abeyance these decisions till February 1.
