ICAR Conducts Climate-Resilient Farming Outreach in Remote Leparada Village

Scientists from ICAR and KVK trained farmers in Badak village on climate-resilient agriculture, soil health management and balanced fertilizer use amid challenging terrain and poor connectivity.

BASAR-  The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Arunachal Pradesh Centre, Basar, in collaboration with ICAR-KVK, West Siang, organized an awareness programme on “Climate Resilient Agriculture” and a campaign on “Balanced Fertilizer Use” at Badak village in Leparada district on May 22.

Despite poor road connectivity and difficult terrain, scientists and officials reached the remote village, located at an altitude of around 700 metres above sea level, to conduct the outreach initiative aimed at promoting sustainable and scientific agricultural practices among tribal farming communities.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Manoj Kumar, Senior Scientist and Head of ICAR-KVK, West Siang, highlighted the importance of climate-resilient agriculture in ensuring food security and sustaining rural livelihoods in hilly regions vulnerable to erratic climatic conditions.

Technical sessions during the programme were conducted by Dr. Ampee Tasung, Scientist (Soil Science), and Dr. Thejangulie Angami, Scientist (Fruits), from the ICAR Arunachal Pradesh Centre. The scientists delivered lectures on soil test-based fertilizer application, Soil Health Cards, organic seed production and nutrient management in cole crops.

The experts also encouraged farmers to adopt crop varieties capable of withstanding low moisture stress, prolonged dry spells and heavy rainfall events associated with changing climate conditions in the northeastern region.

As part of the programme, UV-stabilized sheets, vermibeds and seasonal crop seeds were distributed among participating farmers to support sustainable agricultural activities at the village level.

Officials described the initiative as part of broader efforts to strengthen climate-resilient farming systems and promote balanced nutrient management in remote tribal areas of Arunachal Pradesh. Farmers attending the programme reportedly expressed interest in more such awareness and capacity-building initiatives in the future.
