Arunachal: Lumla MLA Urges Farmers to Adopt Scientific Methods

Programme focuses on balanced fertiliser use, soil health, and modern farming practices for sustainable agriculture in Tawang district.

LUMLA- A capacity-building programme for farmers on the balanced use of fertilisers, along with input distribution under the Tribal Sub-Plan, was organised on Monday at the Karma Wangchu Convention Hall in Lumla subdivision of Tawang district.

The programme was jointly conducted by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute and Krishi Vigyan Kendra Tawang, bringing together farmers, public representatives, and agricultural experts.

Local MLA Tsering Lhamu attended the event as the chief guest, while M. C. Meena, Director of IARI, was present as the guest of honour. Other attendees included ZPM Lumla Thutan Gombu, Circle Officer Phamhoi Wangsu, FPC Chairperson Nawang Chonzom, and farmers from across the subdivision.

During the programme, C. K. Singh was felicitated by the MLA for his role in promoting the high-yielding millet variety VL Mandua 376 in the region, particularly in Lungla.

Addressing the gathering, Meena outlined the objectives of the Tribal Sub-Plan scheme and emphasised the need for adopting scientific agricultural practices to improve productivity and processing. He highlighted the importance of soil health, regular soil testing, and balanced nutrient use, while also cautioning against soil erosion. He noted that the future of agriculture would increasingly depend on nutritional quality alongside yield.

In her address, Lhamu pointed to the agricultural and horticultural potential of the Lungla region. Drawing from her experience as a farmer, she spoke about introducing crops such as arecanut and Miyazaki mango and encouraged farmers to diversify into guava, persimmon, and kiwi cultivation.

She also acknowledged the role of KVK Tawang in supplying millet seeds, including VL Mandua 376, and agricultural tools such as threshers. The MLA urged farmers to take advantage of government schemes like ANBY, ANKY, and ANPPY to work towards self-reliance.

Highlighting environmental concerns, she raised the issue of recurring wildfires in the region and advocated for sustainable and organic farming practices. She also expressed appreciation for the organising institutions and called for more such initiatives in the future.

Other speakers, including Thutan Gombu, Nawang Chonzom, public leader Jambey Tenzin, and Circle Officer Phamhoi Wangsu, also addressed the gathering, focusing on local agricultural challenges and opportunities.

The programme concluded with the distribution of agricultural inputs to farmers by the MLA, followed by a vote of thanks delivered by public leader Tashi Dargey.
