Army’s Mega Plantation Drive -“plant trees, save life”

The Army Unit based at Chirang, under the aegis of the RED HORNS Division of the Indian Army taking cue from the environment concerns & denuding Forest cover in the area and its adverse implications on the local climate and the rich Biodiversity took on a mega plantation drive in collaboration with district Forest Dept alongwith 135 Eco TA Bn based at Bishmuri, Kokrajhar to revive the denuded forest cover and preserve the rich Biodiversity in the region.
The Army’s mega plantation drive began with the under lying objective of “plant trees, save life”. The month long plantation drive commenced on 9th May 16 at Khungring Gaon, a remote vill near Indo – Bhutan Border and culminated on 05 Jun 16, “THE WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY”, in a central function organised at Kashikotra, Chirang, after accomplishing the feat of planting more than Eight thousand plants in phases covering the entire district.
The occasion was graced by Sh. Amit Kr DIG SSB Sector HQ, Sh Rupak Mazumdar, DC Chirang, Lt Col Anand Singh of the Local Army unit, Dist Forest Offr Sh. Subho Brahma, Scientists from the Krishi Vigyan Kendra and others.
The noble initiative of the Army, District Forest Dept & Krishi Vigyan Kendra witnessed mass participation of the locals, which included, children & staff of the local educational institutions, Govt Dept Officials and Members of Social Organisations.
Addressing to the gathering the dignitaries highlighted the environmental issues of aforestation in the present scenario of global warming they appreciated all for their overwhelming contribution in the plantation drive and re-emphasized the need of realizing the importance of respecting and protecting our forest wealth and the rich flora and fauna for our future generations.
The event concluded with the collective resolve of carrying out more such initiatives in future and also ensuring the survivability of the saplings planted during the plantation drive.
