Arunachal: Workshop on ‘Wildlife Protection and Monitoring’ held at Mouling National Park

JENGGING- ( Upper Siang ) Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment (ATREE), in collaboration with the Mouling Division of Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department, conducted a successful hands-on training workshop on ‘Wildlife Protection and Monitoring’ for Mouling National Park’s field and frontline staff on November 24, 2023, in Jengging, Upper Siang district.

Focusing on modern tools, the workshop, which aimed to equip the staff with skills for documenting, monitoring, and protecting wildlife using camera trapping techniques, was attended by over 20 staff from different ranges within Mouling.

The workshop was divided into three sessions. During the morning theoretical session, the participants were introduced to history and technological advancements of modern camera trapping.

The afternoon session focussed on demonstrating practical use of camera trap and deployment including retrieving them from the field safely and managing the photographic data.

The last valedictory session included a quiz on camera trapping techniques for the participants in which all the attendees came out with flying colours.

Dr. Rajkamal Goswami, Fellow in Residence at Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology & the Envrironment (ATREE), who led the training workshop, said that he found “the motivation and interest of Mouling National Park staff in learning new technical skills highly commendable.”

Bittem Darrang, Divisional Forest Officer of Mouling stressed the need for “a series of similar workshops to improve protection efforts and enable the systematic wildlife documentation of Mouling, which is among the least explored protected areas of India.”

The workshop was highly appreciated by the participants including Obian Jongkey, Range Forest Officer of Jengging range who emphasised the significance of technical training for frontline staff in boosting protection and monitoring activities.
