An Indonesia airlines flight, Lion Air, has crashed into the sea shortly after taking off from the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.

An Indonesia airlines flight, Lion Air, has crashed into the sea shortly after taking off from the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. The flight had 188 passengers on board. The incident took place on Monday morning.

The flight, scheduled to Pangkal Pinang, the main town in the Bangka Belitung Islands of Sumatra, lost its control and connection with the ground staff 13 minutes after take-off. The ill-fated plane was last tracked crossing the sea.

It was a Boeing 737 MAX 8 which is a brand new type of aircraft. The flight took off from Jakarta at 06:20 local time on Monday morning (23:30 GMT on Sunday). Confirming the plane crash, Yusuf Latif, a spokesman for the agency said, “It has been confirmed that it has crashed.”

Providing further information on the plane crash, an official of state energy firm Pertamina states that debris which is doubted to be of the aircraft was found near an offshore refining facility in the Java Sea. He said, “We don’t know yet whether there are any survivors.”

Edward Sirait, chief executive of Lion Air Group states, “We are trying to collect all the information and data.”
