Community Awareness cum School Safety Programme on Disaster Management

Longding

A week-long Community Awareness cum School Safety Programme on natural and man-made disaster for teachers & students, officials of all departments, NGOs, CBOs, Chiefs, GBs, Panchayat leaders and traders associations was held at Longding, Kanubari and Pongchau administrative divisions under Longding district beginning from Dec 20th 2016 by the District Disaster Management Authority, Longding in collaboration with 12th BN NDRF, Doimukh, Arunachal Pradesh.

Vijay Mitte FO (Disaster Management) coordinated the Programme who also elaborated on different types of disasters and vulnerability of the Longding district.

The NDRF team was led by GD  Bhaskar Kumar Team Commander and his team who demonstrated during the programme on basic survival skills during disaster. The focus of the programme was core lifesaving skills and essential emergency procedures with greater emphasis on practical hands-on engagements during disaster. It was a kind of familiarization programme as the NDRF visited the district for the first time to demonstrate on different survival techniques and dos and don’ts on various hazards

At Kanubari, Earthquake simulation exercise was also carried out to demonstrate on search and rescue procedures followed by the NDRF during any disaster.

A similar programme was held at Pongchau where L.Naam, CO urged all the participants to cooperate with the team and take advantage of the programme which will be of immense use during any exigency in future.

While the awareness programme was about to end, an information of breaking out of fire accident at wakka village was received by CO, Wakka who held an emergency meeting with FO (DM) i/c DDMO and 12th Bn NDRF team and a team was constituted to rush to the incident site along with first aids and reliefs materials which were distributed to the fire accident victims of wakka village. This was the first team with relief materials which reached on the incident site.

The team returned back to the district headquarters in the early morning of Dec 23rd  to continue with their disaster awareness programme at Longding where large numbers of participants attended the programme. This was the concluding day of the programme however the Deputy Commissioner could not join the programme due to fire accident at Wakka village.

During the whole programme period, basic search and rescue skills and first aids techniques with practical demonstration was carried out by the team. Leaflets on safety tips and Dos and Don’ts on Earthquake, Fire, Landslide, Cyclone and Flood were also distributed to the participants.
