Ayi: Ke Ekum Celebrates World Senior Citizens Day at Pasighat

The Pasighat-based NGO used the occasion to highlight the importance of companionship, dignity and the life experiences of senior citizens.

PASIGHAT-   Ayi: Ke Ekum, an NGO established in May 2023, celebrated World Senior Citizens Day at the IGJ Government Higher Secondary School Auditorium in Pasighat, focusing on the dignity, wisdom and contributions of elderly people.

The most significant focus of the programme was the issue of loneliness among senior citizens and the need to create spaces where elderly people can remain socially connected. Tigul Megu, while introducing the vision behind Ayi: Ke Ekum, said the organisation provides a platform for senior citizens above 70 years to spend quality time together, share experiences and overcome loneliness.

The organisation’s approach places emphasis not only on social interaction but also on recognising the experience and knowledge of older people. Megu highlighted the role of elders’ stories and values in shaping society and guiding future generations.

The celebration also featured a traditional cultural presentation, with senior citizens performing Ka:do Ponnung, an age-old cultural song.

Chief Guest Tapi Darang, HMLA of 38-East Pasighat, appreciated Ayi: Ke Ekum for creating a welcoming environment for senior citizens. He identified loneliness as one of the major challenges faced by elderly people and stressed that society has a collective responsibility to ensure that senior citizens spend their later years with happiness, dignity and companionship. He also presented gifts to senior citizens who recorded the highest attendance at the centre.

Guest of Honour M. T. Padung, Deputy Director (ICDS), also appreciated the initiative and underlined the continuing importance of elders in society. She encouraged senior citizens to pass their knowledge and life experiences on to younger generations, describing elders as pillars of society.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Pemi Tato Perme, Vice President of Ayi: Ke Ekum. Dignitaries, officers, officials, senior citizens and family members of elderly people associated with the organisation attended the event.

The celebration underlined a broader social message: support for senior citizens goes beyond financial or physical care and also involves companionship, social participation and recognition of their knowledge and contribution to society.
