Arunachal: Chowna Mein called for more research-oriented work in agriculture and horticulture sector by KVK and ICAR

Deputy Chief Minister, Chowna Mein called for more research-oriented work in agriculture and horticulture sector by KVK and ICAR. He said this while attending an inaugural function of a Workshop on Entrepreneurship Development cum Input Distribution Programme at KVK Momong in Namsai here today.
Citing the decline of Mandarin Orange of the Wakro area (once known as the Orange Bowl of Arunachal Pradesh) as a setback to the farmer which could not be contained by the agriculture & horticulture departments till date, he said that not enough research work has been done to control the Orange decline due to which the disease had completely devastated the Orange Orchard in Wakro area and it has spread in other areas too. He said that more research work need to be carried out by the KVK or ICAR in Orange declining and other such type of diseases. He suggested for development of indigenous rootstock to contain such kind of diseases.

While lauding the works done by the KVK Namsai in agricultural extension works in the district, he said that Farmers Producer Company need to be strengthened to make them self-sustainable and to become an employer. He further suggested to develop demonstration plot of tropical fruits in the KVK complex and also to popularize large scale cultivation of Khamti Rice and King Chilly, which have high demands in the market.
He further informed that an Auction Centre and Whole Sale Mandi will be established in the vicinity so that the whole area become a hub for promotion and augmentation of agricultural activities and marketing of agricultural produces which will benefit not only farmers of Namsai but whole of the eastern region.
He further said that the recommendations of the various workshops and Conclave on Agriculture & allied sectors had been incorporated in the budget and it is in the pipeline now. He, however, called for speedy implementation of the various schemes passed in the State budget by the concerned departments stating implementation part as most important thing so that the people reap the benefits of those schemes.
Earlier, Mein inaugurated and visited an exhibition stall put up by Namsai Organic Spices & Agriculture Product Producer Company Limited, promoted by Spice Board of India.
On the occasion, Mein released publication of Technical Bulletins and News Letter by KVK Namsai. He also gave away certificates to quality seed grower trainees and distributed critical inputs to ABI members and progressive farmers.
Dr A K Tripathi, Director of Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute Zone VI, Guwahati, Dr N Prakash, Joint Director, ICAR RC NEH Region, AP Centre, Basar and Dr Manish Kanwat, Senior Scientist and Head KVK Namsai also spoke on the occasion.
Members of Farmers Producer Company, Namsai and Large Cardamom Growers from Anjaw districts also highlighted their grievances before the Deputy Chief Minister to which he assured to look into.
Among others, DC Namsai, Bijay Talukdar, SP, Ankit Kr Singh, EAC Chongkham, Rani Perme, HoDs, Public Leaders and Farmers were also present.
The workshop was sponsored by Agri-Business Incubation (ABI) Centre and jointly organized by KVK Namsai & ICAR – Research Complex for NEH region AP Centre, Basar.
