Arunachal: Cooking competition to promote local cuisines

The theme of the competition was ‘Backyard biodiversity local vegetable and herbs’.

In a bid to promote local cuisines in the local market, Department of Tourism, Govt. of Arunachal has organized cooking competition (vegetarian) here at State Food Craft Institute (SFCI) today.

The theme of the competition was ‘Backyard biodiversity local vegetable and herbs’.

Among the 13 total participants, Tilek Perme, Teri Yajo and Yade Dujom got the first, second and third prizes respectively while the consolation prizes were given to Nabam Neme Ngurang and Techi Nime.

In her keynote address to the participants, Tourism assistant director Bengia Manna Sonam exhorted them to preserve the biodiversity and use the local herbs sustainable for commercial purpose.

She further said participating in such event is more important rather than getting prizes in order to boost themselves.

The assistant director also assured to give more training to unemployed youths and make them well equipped to run business at their own.

“We have got enough natural resource to use in eatery business. Only the thing is you need to enhance the cooking skill in innovative way”, she said.

APTOA president John Panye said the women can also play a vital role in promoting tourism in the state by running homestay and restaurant.

Informing that the state is god gifted place where natural resources are abundantly found, he appealed all to tap the natural and organic resources for sustainable income.

“Tourists are looking for indigenous food and culture. It’s high time we need to market and tap the potential properly”, Panye said.

TIO Duyir Yedi said selling local cuisines in the market will fill the gap of unemployment and also good for health. She informed that the people are nowadays looking for local and organic food for health reason.

SFCI consultant S Kar informed that the motive behind the competition was to promote local vegetables and herbs through local talents.

Hotel SC Continental Manager Sanjay Nangia also took part in the daylong cooking competition.
