The state government has plans to provide free Wi-Fi Facility at all-important public places in the state capital city Itanagar to Naharlagun. Chief Minister Kalikho Pul hopes that the internet connectivity would benefit the students most as there are a number of reference books, online help centres and experts views available that can make the learning process very easy.
The measure will be in line with the Prime Minister’s ambitious ‘Digital India’ programme that aims at boosting Internet connectivity across the country.
The Department of Information Technology will implement the free Wi-Fi hotspot service in select public places. The bandwidth service for the Wi-FI hotspot will be provided by State owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) or some other private service provider.
A hotspot is a place that will offer Internet access over a Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) through an Internet service provider using Wi-Fi technology. Public Wi-Fi hotspot will allow the citizens to get free access to Internet on their Smartphone, tablets, laptops and
other mobile devices.
To avail the benefit of Wi-fi service in the twin city each user will have to register themselves by providing their basic info like name, e-mail, phone no etc that will be stored in the database server. An authentication in the form of One Time Password (OTP) or email will be sent to user to enable them to get connected to the Wi-Fi hotspot. Security is always a big threat through Wi-Fi at public places and to ensure to establish well-regulated and proper watchdog system as mandatory, Firewall cum Unified Threat Management (UTM) will be used to keep the users and network safe and secured from security threats.
The data usage shall be controlled through system administrator depending upon the number of registered users, the bandwidth capacity to be provided. All the social networking site will be monitored and remain under the scanner of the network administrator who will be deployed by the Department of Information Technology to oversee the usage of internet through wi-fi at public places as secure and transparent.
With the setting up of wi-fi hotspot in the twin city, the benefits of having a free and public wireless zone will be intrinsic to all mode of operation and will bridge the digital divide and send a signal that the town is informed forward-thinking and ready to welcome positive change.
