Arunachal: Road Safety Awareness Programme Held in Tawang

As part of National Road Safety Month, the Tawang district administration, transport office and police organised an awareness programme to promote responsible driving and traffic discipline.

TAWANG-  The District Transport Office (DTO), Tawang, in collaboration with the district administration and district police, organised a Road Safety Awareness Programme at Old Market, Tawang, on Monday as part of the ongoing National Road Safety Month observance.

The programme aimed to promote responsible driving practices and enhance awareness about traffic rules among drivers, taxi operators and the general public. Senior district officials and police officers addressed participants on road safety, legal compliance and shared responsibility on public roads.

Superintendent of Police, Tawang, Dr D.W. Thongon, while addressing the gathering, stressed that traffic awareness is essential for all road users. He noted that with increasing vehicular movement, “everyone is a driver today,” underscoring the need for collective responsibility. He also urged taxi drivers to brief tourists about the do’s and don’ts issued by the district administration and highlighted restrictions on foreign tourist movement in certain sensitive areas of Tawang in the interest of national security.

Additional Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Transport Officer Rinchin Leta spoke on the importance of traffic discipline and safe driving behaviour. Citing national data, he said that one life is lost every four minutes in India due to road accidents, many of which occur because of delayed assistance. He highlighted the Government of India’s Raah Veer Scheme, which encourages citizens to assist accident victims without fear of legal consequences.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Kesang Norbu appealed to participants to not only listen to safety guidelines but also implement them in daily practice, emphasising that road safety is equally important for drivers and pedestrians.

Inspector Niyi Angu explained the legal consequences of traffic violations and called for strict adherence to traffic laws, while Motor Vehicle Inspector A. L. Khushwaha provided detailed information on traffic signs and road symbols.

The president of the Taxi Union Tawang, Tashi Dondup, urged drivers to keep snow chains ready during winter months to avoid accidents caused by black ice. As part of the programme, free helmets were distributed to selected riders.

Officials informed that similar road safety awareness programmes will be organised in schools, colleges and other parts of the district in the coming days.
