Arunachal Pradesh Signs MoU with NIT for AI Centre of Excellence
The Centre of Excellence on Artificial Intelligence will support research, innovation, skill development and startup growth as part of the state's Digital Arunachal vision.

ITANAGAR: In a significant step towards advancing its digital transformation agenda, the Government of Arunachal Pradesh has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Arunachal Pradesh for the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence (AI CoE) at the institute.
The MoU was executed on June 8, 2026, between the State Council of IT and e-Governance (SCITeG) under the Department of Information Technology and Communication, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, and NIT Arunachal Pradesh.
The agreement was signed by Prof. M.V. Aware, Director of NIT Arunachal Pradesh, and Neelam Yapin Tana, Director-cum-Member Secretary of SCITeG, in the presence of Dr. Sonal Swaroop, Secretary of the Department of Information Technology and Communication, Government of Arunachal Pradesh.

According to officials, the proposed Centre of Excellence on Artificial Intelligence is envisioned as a specialized facility that will serve as a hub for research, innovation, skill development and technological advancement. The centre is expected to provide governance frameworks, research resources, startup support and strategic direction aimed at maximizing the potential of AI-driven solutions.
The initiative aligns with the state government’s broader vision of realizing Digital Arunachal through the adoption of emerging technologies. Artificial Intelligence has been identified as a key enabler in improving governance, public service delivery, innovation and economic development.

The AI Centre of Excellence will be established with financial and technical support from the IndiaAI Mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. SCITeG, the state’s nodal agency for Information Technology and e-Governance, has been entrusted with implementing and coordinating the initiative.
Officials stated that the centre will function as a think tank, innovation incubator and capacity-building institution, promoting the adoption of advanced digital solutions across government departments, academia, industry and society. It is also expected to foster entrepreneurship and strengthen the startup ecosystem by providing support for AI-based innovations and research-driven enterprises.

The project is being guided under the leadership of Nyamar Karbak, Chairman of SCITeG, who has been credited with driving the state’s efforts to leverage technology for governance and development.
NIT Arunachal Pradesh, recognized as an institution of national importance, will play a central role in the initiative. With its academic infrastructure, research ecosystem and pool of skilled faculty members and researchers, the institute is expected to contribute significantly to AI research, innovation, talent development and capacity-building programmes.
The collaboration reflects growing efforts by the state government to position Arunachal Pradesh as an emerging hub for technology-led innovation while creating opportunities for students, researchers, entrepreneurs and public institutions to benefit from advancements in Artificial Intelligence.
