Arunachal: ICAR Revives Yak Rearing in Shi-Yomi

ICAR–NRC on Yak, in collaboration with state agencies, reintroduces yak rearing in Mechuka to support livelihoods, eco-tourism, and cultural preservation.

MECHUKA-  A yak reintroduction programme was conducted in Mechuka Block of Shi-Yomi district in Arunachal Pradesh on April 3, 2026, with the stated objective of strengthening livestock-based livelihoods and preserving traditional cultural practices associated with yak rearing.

The initiative was led by the ICAR–National Research Centre on Yak (ICAR–NRC on Yak), Dirang, under the chairmanship of its Director, Dr. Mihir Sarkar. The programme focused on promoting scientific yak husbandry practices in high-altitude regions, where traditional livestock systems remain central to local economies.

Officials indicated that the initiative is intended to contribute to sustainable livestock development in high-altitude regions, where ecological conditions and limited infrastructure often constrain livelihood opportunities. Yak rearing, which has traditionally been practiced in such terrains, is also being positioned as a potential driver of eco-tourism.

The programme reflects a broader policy emphasis on integrating traditional knowledge systems with scientific interventions to support community resilience and economic development in remote areas of Arunachal Pradesh.
