Arunachal: RGU Felicitates Medal Winners in Karate Championships

Rajiv Gandhi University honours students for winning medals at Northeast Zone and All India Inter-University Karate Championships.

ITANAGAR-  Rajiv Gandhi University ( RGU ) felicitated its medal-winning athletes for their performance at the North East Zone and All India Inter-University Karate Championships 2025–26, held at Dibrugarh University under the aegis of the Association of Indian Universities.

At the North East Zone Inter-University Karate Championship, the RGU team secured the second runner-up position among 76 participating universities. In individual events, Sonam Porang won a gold medal in the men’s -55 kg Kumite category, while Gomi Dulom secured gold in the women’s -68 kg Kumite category.

The team continued its performance at the All India Inter-University Karate Championship, where RGU athletes won one silver and two bronze medals. Lokam Nime secured a silver medal in the women’s -55 kg Kumite category, while Sonam Porang and Gomi Dulom won bronze medals in their respective categories.

University officials said the results reflect growing participation and performance in sports at both regional and national levels.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. S. K. Nayak congratulated the athletes, noting that such achievements highlight the role of sports in overall student development. He emphasised the importance of discipline and consistent effort in achieving excellence.

The felicitation programme was attended by senior university officials, including Registrar Dr. N. T. Rikam and other faculty members, who acknowledged the contributions of the athletes and coaching staff.

Special mention was made of coach Raja Yangfo for his role in training and guiding the team.

Officials stated that the university will continue to support sports activities alongside academic programmes, as part of a broader effort to encourage holistic development among students.
