Seminar on Anthropology in Arunachal Pradesh- Prospects and Challenges

The Department of Anthropology under School of Human & Environmental Sciences, Saint Claret College, Ziro organised an Annual Departmental Seminar on the theme “Anthropology in Arunachal Pradesh: Prospects and Challenges” on Saturday, the 10th September, 2016. The seminar was graced by an avid anthropologist Mr. Habung Tamang, the Principal of Himalayan Heritage School, Ziro as Chairperson and Ms. Rimi Tadu, a PhD scholar from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Hyderabad as special guest. The seminar was coordinated by Mr. Bhaboklang Sohkhlet, the Head of Department, and Mr. Tame Ramya, an Assistant Professor.

Delivering a keynote address of the seminar, Mr. Tamang put before the gatherings the scope and future prospects of anthropology in Arunachal Pradesh on the basis of four major branches of anthropology viz. Biological/Physical Anthropology, Socio-Cultural Anthropology, Archaeological Anthropology, and Linguistic Anthropology. Earlier, he congratulates the Department of Anthropology in particular and Saint Claret College in general for organizing such an important academic programme that open up a vista for students to attract towards research. In particular, he applauds the devotion and determination put in by students of anthropology towards the discipline and the seminar. He suggests the students to carry on with their hard works and to make the most of every opportunity from the seminar.

In toto, three papers on the seminar theme were presented by the undergraduate students of anthropology. The first paper was presented by Michi Khambo and Teshmi Raji Tamin of B.A. III Semester (Anthropology) on “Genesis, Establishment of Anthropology and its Contribution Henceforth”. The second paper, “Anthropological Researches in Arunachal Pradesh” was presented by Taru Tayung and Hage Okang of B.A. V Semester (Anthropology Major). The final paper on “Current Status and Challenges of Anthropology in Arunachal Pradesh” was presented by Nada Tido and Taba Rina of B.A. V Semester (Anthropology Major).

Before that While welcoming the gatherings, Mr. Ramya, an Assistant Professor, thanked the chairperson on his availability for the seminar besides welcoming the guests, teaching & non-teaching staffs, and students to the seminar. He also explained about the theme of the seminar and highlighted the importance and need of more anthropological researches in multicultural, multilingual state like Arunachal Pradesh.

The seminar was attended by students and faculty members from different departments of Saint Claret College.

  1. It is indeed a very good initiative by Saint Claret College, Ziro. Anthropology is really a need of the hour in Arunachal Pradesh to understand and suggests the measures to preserve the rich tribal cultural heritages of the state.
