Prabhu Lays Foundation Stone of Sairang Railway Station Building in Mizoram

Mizoram is not only the land of hardworking people but is also the land of peace-loving people. That makes it rich in human capital which is a sure recipe for development if supported by requisite infrastructure. Railway will make all-out effort to provide the infrastructure to accelerate development in Mizoram”. This was stated by the Minister of Railways, Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu while laying the foundation stone of the station building of Sairang railway station at Sairang today.

The function was attended by Honourable Governor of Mizoram, Lt. Gen (retd.) Nirbhay Sharma, Chief Minister of Mizoram Lal Thanhawla, Minister of State for Railways  Rajen Gohain, Minister of Transport of Mizoram John Rotluangliana, Member of Lok Sabha  C. L. Ruala, General Manager of N. F. Railway Chahatey Ram, General Manager of N. F. Railway (Construction)  H. K. Jaggi other senior railway and Mizoram Government officials, host of invited guests and public.

The Railway Minister said, Indian Railway would construct all future stations in the country keeping the local ethos as major part of design. He said, future development in the region, especially of railway network, would make northeast the “destination” instead of being a transit point. He emphasized on railway’s role in economic development of the region and said – Railway would not only be the engine of growth but would also be the catalyst of social transformation. Citing examples of rich natural resources of the state, the Minister called for better utilization of the natural resources like bamboo. He announced that Railways would plan for more and more use of bamboo products of the region in the Indian Railway system to give a boost to the industry.

The Chief Minister, Lal Thanhawla in his speech described the laying of foundation stone of the station as proud and memorable moment for the people of the state. He thanked the Railway Minister Mr  Prabhu, The Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain for the special effort to connect the capital of Mizoram with a broad Gauge railway line. He said, the coming of broad gauge line to Sairang would be a milestone in the progress of Mizoram.

The Minister of State for Railways  Rajen Gohain said, the new BG line from Bairabi to Sairang was part of Indian Railway vision to connect all the capitals of North Eastern states through BG line by the year 2020. The 50.38 Km new line originates from Bairabi station and terminates at Sairang station, which is 20 Km from Aizawl. Due to very steep gradient between Sairang and Aizawl, it was not feasible to take up the line up to Aizawl city, he said. He also assured the gathering that all efforts would be made to complete the project in stipulated time.

Speaking in the function the Governor of Mizoram, Lt Gen (retd.) Shri Nirbhay Sharma congratulated N. F. Railway team and Railway Minister for taking up the project for connecting capital of Mizoram with the rest of the country with railway line and said that today’s event was a momentous occasion which marks the progress of coming of railway line to the capital. He emphasized on building railway connectivity with the neighboring states of Bangladesh and Myanmar in the near future as it would be vital for development of the state. The Governor also requested the State and Railway authorities to consider construction of a quality hospital and a school at Sairang for the benefit of the people.

Earlier, welcoming the guests,  H. K. Jaggi, General Manager, N. F. Railway (Construction) said that the proposed station would be a modern building with state-of-the-art facilities and highest standard of cleanliness. He said, the station building was designed as a symbol of peace, progress and modernity.

About Bhairabi – Sairang New BG Line

The alignment passes through difficult hilly terrain covered with dense forest throughout its length. There are 23 tunnels – longest being 1766m – 38 major bridges and 6 tall bridges (the tallest being 117m high). There are four stations in the section excluding Bairabi. They are Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and Sairang. Each station will have high level passenger platform, covered shed, and other passenger amenities. Sairang station is proposed with one high level main platform and one island platform, foot over bridge with lift / escalator, food plaza and other passenger amenities. Goods handling facilities and coaching rake maintenance facilities are also planned at the station.

Construction of tunnels, minor and major bridges and earthwork in cutting and formation has been taken up throughout the section. The new rail link is slated for completion in year 2019-20. The new rail link will boost up the trade and commerce as well as create immense potential for domestic and overseas marketing apart from meeting the aspirations of the people of the Mizoram State.
