Jambey Tashi Visits Landslide-hit Zemithang

Lumla MLA Jambey Tashi visited the worst-hit Zemithang on Friday. He was accompanied by ADC Mika Nyori, CO Tashi Dondup, HoDs, public leaders and a team comprising of several engineers to assess the damages inflicted by mudslides and flash floods in the region and to mobilize rescue and relief efforts.
A major landslide triggered by incessant rain ripped through Kelengteng and Kharman villages sweeping off 3 houses and killing livestocks in Zemithang yesterday night. As the two prime villages remain cut-off, 2 residential buildings, a WWF camp site, and office building of Community Conserve Area Management committee built at the cost of Rs 7 Lakhs were swept away. “The incense grinding machinery installed inside the building and raw meterials worth Rs 3 lakhs has also been washed away”, informed Kockti, a local resident.
The local MLA instructed to speed up restoration activities after inspecting the damages at the 12th century Gorsam stupa. He directed PWD department to construct CC drainage, retaining wall and CC steps inside the stupa compound as soon as possible to ward off secondary disasters and underlined the importance of clearing the sludge as soon as possible and solving the drinking water and electricity problem.
Jambey also laid emphasis on widening the drainage system upon inspecting damages at a Government residential school in Zemithang. He declared education and healthcare to be the number one agenda where there is no place for compromises and sanctioned a retaining wall, CC drain and an assembly ground for the school.
He also heeded the request of the local populace to upgrade the school to secondary level as soon as possible
The entourage then visited Brokenthang village nestled on the west bank of river Nyamjangchu. The hamlet remains under constant threat of flood and submergence as 200 metres of the boulder wall safeguarding the village has collapsed. Jambey met with local officials and directed immidate assistance to the village.
Later, Jambey gave a patient hearing and redressed the grievances of the locals during an interactive session at Zemithang IB. He sanctioned a RCC drain and slab culvert near the sports stadium, a storm drain and culvert in Karingar village and retaining walls in Lumpo and Muchut Gonpa. Funds for boundary wall and renovation of Sangteng gonpa in Socktsen village and community hall were also allocated.
Meanwhile, ITBP reported washing off of the steel suspension bridge on the porter track from Log bridge to Khukhri in the strategic Indo-Sino border in Zemithang. Jambey immediately instructed the concerned department to get in action and immediately reconstruct the bridge upon hearing the news declaring that the security of the nation can’t be toyed with .
