Itanagar: ‘Impressed Tortoise’ sighted in Banderdewa 

Right, now there are three Manouria Impressa tortoise in the Itanagar zoo, out of which two males and 1 female. The one recently sighted from Kakoi area is a young  male tortoise.

Another species of Manouria Impressa also known as Impressed Tortoise has been sighted for the second time since it’s first discovery in the India in June this year.

The second sighting of Impressed Tortoise was sighted from Kakoi area in Banderdewa sub forest division in Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Waru Nakong, a native of Kakoi area, where the tortoise was sighted this week, said ” after seeing  the news report earlier on rescue of a tortoise which was later handed over to the Itanagar  zoo, from that time became more concern and told his father to not kill the tortoise if happens to see in near future.

Nakong also informed that, his father has sighted the tortoise and informed him. The young boy also said that, earlier the villagers use to kill the tortoise for food, but now he is hopeful that the villagers will also surely know it’s importance, as the one rescued is endangered species.

Bunty Tao, a range forest officer of Raga under  Hapoli Forest Division has first discovered the rare species of tortoise, and today along with the boy, ( rescuer) they rescued the tortoise in Botanical Park Itanagar.

Because of the first discovery of this rare tortoise species in Arunachal, earlier the International Union for Conservation of Nature ( IUCN) has written a letter if appreciation to the state forest department informed Bunty Tao.

The first discovery of Manouria Impressa in June this year in Yazali under Lower Subansiri district has increased the total number to 29 species of non- marine chelonians and five recorded tortoises.

According to  an expert, the male is smaller than the female which is 30 cm in length. This tortoises eats Musroom , Cucumber, Pumkin along with few other selective food items informed, SC Paul, a Forester in the Itanagar Biological park.
