Not for nothing Arunachal is dubbed as a land of festivals. All the major tribes of the state celebrate their major festivals at Itanagar and district headquarters annually with great pomp and show.

Now, the pertinent question is, why are so many other festivals being celebrated in the state? Can’t the activities included in these festivals be dove-tailed with the major annual festivals that will save resources, time and labour?

Celebrating so many festivals can potentially drain the resources of the state. These festivals also hamper the functioning of offices as most of the government employees are fully involved in these festivals.

Interestingly, people find nothing new in these scores of festivals. They only get to see VVIP culture, same old modern dances, laud music, lots of alcohol, meat and costly food stalls. Commercialization of these festivals is a reality, a sad reality.

Too much of everything is not good. We shouldn’t bite off more than we can chew. Instead of these numerous and strange-sounding festivals, organize literary and other intellectually enriching competitions to engage the youth gainfully.

These festivals where drinks flow like rivers and modern songs and dances which are not even remotely connected with tribal culture, are only spoiling the young mind. Add to these festivals, New Year, Christmas, picnics and other Pujas and celebrations. With so much to celebrate, when will we work for the development of our beautiful state?
