Assam: Lung Cancer Awareness Day at RGU

Lung Cancer Awareness Day was observed by Royal School of Medical & Allied Sciences and Royal School of Nursing at Royal Global University on 25 November 2019. Dr. A.C Kataky, Director and Professor, B Borooah Cancer Institute was the invited Guest Speaker. Prof. (Dr.) A.C Kataky enlightened the students on Lung Cancer – the different regions of India and North East affected by it and its causes, signs & symptoms and prevention of Lung Cancer.

 He spoke on the preventive measures to be taken, the different signs and symptoms and when to see a doctor.  He highlighted that if one coughs blood or spits blood, recurrent respiratory tract infection, new or different cough, back, chest or shoulder pain, troubled breathing, loss of appetite, weight loss, difficulty in swallowing or swelling in neck or face, one should immediately see a doctor.

Cancer affects millions of lives globally. Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) reports suggest that Assam and Tripura has the highest rate of tobacco consumption and the consumption rate has increased from 39% to 49% for Assam and 56% to 65% for Tripura within a time span of 7 years (2010-2017).  Assam is registered as the top state in North East with the highest number of cancer cases of 29,962 in 2017, and still counting.
