The Governor of Arunachal Pradesh Brig. (Dr.) B.D. Mishra (Retd.) has extended his warm greetings to each and every member of the Press, Print and Electronic Media and the reporting fraternity of Arunachal Pradesh and the country on the special occasion of National Press Day. He expressed his hope that the occasion will inspire every journalist and all others associated with Press to maintain highest standards of constructive news reporting.

In his message, the Governor said that the Press, on account of its critical role in protecting the interests of the people and moulding positive public opinion, becomes the ‘Fourth Pillar’ and ‘Watchdog’ of Democracy.

The most important and fundamental duty of the Press is to assail falsehood. It has an important obligation to serve the truth and hold a mirror to the contemporary happenings in the society, he said.

The Governor emphasised that while the press and journalists enjoy certain privileges like easy access to the corridors of power, these privileges, equally cast onerous responsibilities on them to be independent, objective and non partisan.

While resorting to criticism of the establishment, the intended goal of such critiques viz, the strengthening of democratic institutions and social fibers must never be forgotten. Similarly, while availing of the Constitutional guaranty of the Freedom of Speech and Expression, the responsibility for not to label or be licentious, must not be lost sight of by the Press,.

We, the people, expect the media to be responsible and committed to play an unbiased role for ensuring justice to the deprived and good governance for all, he said.

On the occasion of the National Press Day, I appeal to all my patriotic members of the Media Fraternity to be partners in the developmental process of the State. I also urge the Press people of Arunachal Pradesh to take a PLEDGE TO PROMOTE PEACE, PROGRESS AND DEMOCRATIC VALUES IN OUR SOCIETY, the Governor said in his message.
