Arunacha Pradesh- CM Pema Khandu visits Tawang War Memorial

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu today visited the Tawang War memorial dedicated to the martyrs of the 1962 India China war. The Chief Minister paid homage to the brave jawans by laying a wreath on the memorial followed by a hand salute and bugle salute.

He also paid his homage to Subedar Joginder Singh, who was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his heroic act in the war of 1962 in Kameng Sector. The war monument also houses the replica of the memorial of Subedar Joginder Singh.

Khandu accompanied by Brigadier MP Singh, Commander of the 190 Mountain Brigade went round the monument where the walls are decorated with plaques of the names of the martyred soldiers, etched in golden letter.

The Chief Minister greeted and interacted with officers and jawans of the 190 Mountain Brigade. He said Indian Army and the local people of Tawang district have always maintained harmonious relations with each other.

He said the War Memorial has attracted lots of tourists in recent days and has potential to become a major tourist site in Tawang.

The 40-foot high Tawang War Memorial, also known as Namgyal Chorten was erected in memory of 2420 soldiers of the Indian Army who died in the war. Former GOC-in-C of Eastern Command, Lt Gen HS Kalkat dedicated the memorial to the nation on 2nd November 1999 and was also
blessed by His Holiness, the Dalai Lama.

The national flag, Army flag and Air Force flag surrounds the war monument with rest other 27 flags represents the colours of the regiments that took part in the 1962 debacle.

Also the monument contains idols of Lord Buddha and Lord Avalokitshwara consecrated inside the Stupa. It is decorated with precious stones, ornaments and relics contributed by the locals of
Tawang.
