Chief Minister Pema Khandu today declared the opening of 5th ‘Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsava’ organised by Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India here at Parade Ground.

The 9-day cultural extravaganza will witness the participation of about 100 artists representing different tribes of Arunachal and more than 500 artists from across the country showcasing their traditional folk dances and music.

Chief Minister in his inaugural address thanked and appreciated Union Minister of State for Tourism & Culture, Dr Mahesh Sharma’s leadership for organising the big event at Arunachal despite the issues of communication bottleneck and the region being a border state.

“It is a matter of pride for Tawang and Arunachal that a big cultural event comprising more than 800 artists is being held here. Despite repeated claims by a neighbouring country, Arunachal is more Indian than any other part of the country,” he said.

The CM further said that Arunachal being land to more than 26 tribes and 100 sub tribes with diversity of culture expanding from Tawang to Longding is the best place to host such mega cultural event.

In his message to the people, he appealed the youths to preserve their cultural identity and to be the agent to carry forward the ancient culture to next generation. Khandu lauded the senior members of the tribal community to have preserved and promoted the ancient culture and tradition. Also acknowledging the need for society to embrace modernity and development, the Chief Minister urged the people not to leave behind their culture in pursuit of it.

Lamenting that department of art and culture to have been neglected in past, Khandu said his government will give due importance to it. He said that to bring back life to the department, a performing leader like Minister for Art & Culture, Dr Mohesh Chai has been entrusted with the job.

The CM informed that the state will soon see establishment of a regional cultural centre of the North East Zonal Cultural Centre (NEZCC) at Itanagar. The centre would have exhibition of crafts from different tribes of state with state-of-the-art facilities.

The ongoing festival is being implemented through the seven Zonal Cultural Centres and in collaboration with other cultural organizations of different states of North East India. The NEZCC, Dimapur has been entrusted with the responsibility as the nodal agency to carry forward the execution of the national cultural festival of India.

Earlier NEZCC Director Dr OP Bharti delivered the inaugural welcome address. Tawang Deputy Commissioner, Sang Phuntso gave away the vote of thanks. The occasion was graced by presence of Tawang MLA Tsering Tashi, ZPC chairperson Jambey Tsering, Director DoKAA Lama Tashi, Padmashree Lama Thupten Phuntsok, and Brigadier MP Singh, commander of 190 Mountain Brigade.
