All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU), along with various other unions, and NGOs on Wednesday organized protest rallies in various parts of Arunachal Pradesh against the Supreme Court Judgment granting citizenship rights to Chakma and Hajong refugees in Arunachal. the protesters stated that the SC verdict was against the interest of indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh.
In Tezu about 5000 protesters come out on the street and submitted a memorandum to Lohit Deputy Commissioner Tamiyo Tatak for onward submission to the higher authorities of the Government. Protest rally was also held at Wakro circle led by All Lohit District Students Union (ALDSU) in overall.
In Itanagar, the Capital city, Papum Pare District Students’ Union (APPDSU) submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh seeking his cooperation and necessary intervention for amicable solution to the Chakma and Hajong refugee issue.
The union said that Chakmas and Hajongs refugees were given shelter in the State during 1964-1969 in an arbitrary manner and without taking consent from the local indigenous peoples of the area. It was done by violating all the principles and legal provision of the Constitution of India to safeguard the indigenous people of the State, APPDSU said.
A memorandum opposing the SC verdict was submitted to the Kurung Kumey Deputy Commissioner, wherein some local issues relating to Chakmas and Hajongs refugee were also included.
