A delegation of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) led by its new General Manager Dr Gyanendra Mani who took over the charge of NABARD’s Arunachal Pradesh Regional Office, Itanagar, on April 10 last called on the Deputy Chief Minister, Chowna Mein on Wednesday and appraised him about NABARD’s priorities for the state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein extending a warm welcome to Dr. Mani to the State reaffirmed the strong association of GoAP with NABARD and highlighted some of the major achievements achieved together in the past.

During the meeting, Mein asserted that NABARD should upscale its support to Agriculture Sector in the State, especially for strengthening the Agri Marketing system to ensure remunerative prices for various crops grown by the farmers in the state. He requested NABARD to make available its functional and operational expertise to State departments as and when require or sought for. He also highlighted that suitable budgetary allocation has been made in this year’s budget for creation of scientific storage, drying yards, auction centers and other required infrastructure for the benefit of farmers of the State.

Dr Mani suggested that keeping in view the present state of agriculture sector in Arunachal Pradesh, income from farming alone cannot ensure sustainable livelihood to the farmers and it needs to be supplemented by the sources other than crop husbandry. Possibilities of promoting livestock farming, non-farm activities, etc. can be explored, he suggested.

He was accompanied by DGM, Binod Kumar and AGM, K Jagadeesh.
