Major Ponung Doming, First woman from Arunachal promoted to the rank of Lt. Colonel

Major Ponung Doming creates history. She is first woman Army officer from Arunachal to be elevated to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army.

After serving in Indian Army from last 13 years under various capacities including having been the part of India’s International UN Peace keeping force deployed at Congo, Ponung Doming is today promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel at Pune in the presence of her parents.

The message of Lt. Col. Ponung Doming’s achievement has spread like a wild fire as every Arunachalee are proud of her becoming the first such Army officer who rose to such post for the first time. Among congratulatory messages from all quarters including the family members and well-wishers, state’s Chief Minister Pema Khandu also took to the social Media stating his happiness and joy over Doming’s making entire state proud. “A proud moment for all of us, Major  Ponung Doming creates history. She is first woman Army officer from  Arunachal to be promoted as Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army. Hearty congratulations and best wishes”, stated Khandu in his twitter handle.

While speaking from Pune, Lt. Col. Ponung Doming told this reporter that, she is happy and satisfied over her promotion which gives her more responsibility toward the nation. “My parents are with me right now travelling from all the way from Arunachal Pradesh to attend and witness my promotion which is a proud moment for my parents also. I am happy and delighted that, Chief Minister has also congratulated me which is no less a great motivation to me also. After sincere effort and lots of hard works despite financial shortages I could finally make it to such level and I wish and suggest every youths of our state to be determined and sincere in whatever field they choose. My advice to the young aspirants of our Arunachal Pradesh and the region is that, dream big and above all have the courage to achieve or fulfil that in whatever field they are eyeing into”, added lady army officer Lt. Colonel Ponung Doming from Pune.

Her mother,  Mrs Jimmy Dai Doming who works in forest department also happened to be a social worker under Adi Baane Kebang Women Wing said that, she is very proud for her daughter’s promotion. Meanwhile Adi Baane Kebang, the apex & appellate body of Adi tribe also expressed their happiness over Ponung Doming’s becoming first lady army Lieutenant Colonel from the state.

Born to father Olom Doming and mother Jimmi Dai Doming of Pasighat, Lt. Col. Doming pursued her studies from the Government Daying Ering Higher Secondary School and the IGJ Government Higher Secondary School, both in Pasighat. Then she did her civil engineering from the Walchand College of Engineering in Maharashtra and was later commissioned into the Indian Army as a lieutenant in 2008 after clearing Service Selection Board exam at Allahabad and four years and half later she was promoted to the rank of major.

“I will consider myself blessed, if am able to inspire even a single person to do whatever little we can do for our state and the country”, added Lt. Col. Doming.
