Lt Gen DS Ahuja, General Officer Commanding 101 Area, came on his maiden visit to Guwahati after assuming the prestigious and challenging command of the formation. It is pertinent to mention that the 101 Area earlier known as 101 Communication Zone has been looking after the security arrangements of the North East Region since its raising in 1963 at Shillong. on During the 1971 War, the Formation took active part in combat operations in Sylhet and Mymensingh Districts of the erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and was the first to reach Dacca, thereby earning the accolade “FIRST IN DACCA”.
The General Officer arrived at HQ 51 Sub Area Narangi Cantonment in the morning, where he was received by Maj Gen AK Jha, GOC 51 Sub Area and introduced to the important appointments of the HQ and Unit Commanders. Lt Gen DS Ahuja was briefed in detail by GOC 51 Sub Area with regards to the security arrangements in Narangi Cantonment and other stations under command 51 Sub Area, Operational Preparedness of the formation to include Rear Area Security arrangements in a conventional war like situation, Flood Relief Scheme for Guwahati, Training and various welfare projects for the troops. After that the General Officer went out on a visit to the Narangi Cantonment accompanied by Maj Gen AK Jha, to review the situation on ground, especially the security arrangements. Lt Gen DS Ahuja expressed his satisfaction with the security arrangements and progress and development of the Narangi Military Station, he reiterated the need for awareness in all ranks with regards to maintaining the prophylactic security of the station at all times and also continuous training and preparation by the formation to effectively fulfill its operational role.
GOC 101 Area also visited the water pumping facility for Narangi and Bashishta Military Stations being operated and managed by IOCL at Noonmati on the banks of River Brahamaputra, to get a first hand assessment of the prevailing water supply problem, caused due to creation of a sand bar resulting from excessive silting. The GOC was briefed on the current status of the problem and also alternative measures adopted to tide over the predicament by the Garrison Engineer Narangi Cantt, he expressed his deep concern over the issue and promised all assistance on behalf of his HQ 101 Area. It may be noted that as of now the Narangi and Bashishtha Military Stations are getting approximately 4.5 lakh gallon of water per day which is 25% of their minimum requirement.
