Even as the local MLA and Forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma claimed of taking strong action against illegal timber smuggling in the state, illegal felling of trees and timber smuggling continues unabated in different parts of BTAD area including Kokrajhar.
Dhiren Basumatary ranger of the Holtugaon and Ultapani range Kokrajhar said that in a fresh incident of timber smuggling in Kokrajhar, a timber laden truck was seized this morning.
He said that the truck bearing registration no AS 25A 7075 met with an accident at Shyamgaon in Kokrajhar this morning following which the local people informed the forest official who later seized the truck. No one were however arrested as the driver and the other occupant fled the spot after the incident.
The timber is stated to be worth Rs 2.5 lakhs in market value. He added.
Environmentalists and wildlife lovers urged the forest minister and the BTC administration to take strong action against the illegal felling of trees and also on illegal encroachments.
