Chief Minister Pema Khandu, along with cabinet colleague Nabam Rebia (UD), today called on Union Urban Development Minister, Narendra Singh Tomar at his office here and impressed upon the latter to include Itanagar in the ensuing smart city list.

Khandu said Itanagar being capital city of Arunachal, people from all over the state visit the city for business and official work.

He said smart city status for Itanagar will therefore benefit people all over the state catering to their need for modern services and facilities.

The Union Minister appreciated the concern of the Chief Minister and the UD Minister and assured to look into the matter.

Khandu reasoned that Itanagar has made tremendous progress in recent times both in terms of population and infrastructure.

“It has come from being the 3rd dirtiest city to become the 216th cleanest city in the country in just one year, which is a very good reason to believe that Itanagar and its citizens are ready to transform, adapt and innovate to become a Smart City,” Khandu added.

Government of India has already announced the selected list of 90 cities to be developed under the Smart City Mission, Pasighat being one from Arunachal Pradesh.

The effort is on on part of the state government and the capital administration along with Itanagar Municipal Council to push Itanagar to the final list of Smart Cities.

Smart City Mission – launched on June 25, 2015 – is one ambitious and innovative program of the NDA Government that provides Rs 500 crore to each city over a period of 5 years for implementing various projects. According to the scheme there is space for another 10 cities to be developed as smart cities.
