Itanagar: 18th Death Anniversary of Dera Natung observed

Lt. Dera Natung was a man of versatile character. He did his early education from Government Higher Secondary School, Seppa.

The 18th Death Anniversary of Dera Natung was observed on 8th May 2019 at the college premises. The programme begins with a Floral Tribute to Lt. Dera Natung followed by two minute silence for his departed soul. The Principal Dr. N.T. Rikam narrated the life sketch of Lt. Dera Natung :

Born on 1st July 1964 to a humble family of Sepai Natung & Yache Natung at Veo village of East Kameng District, Arunachal Pradesh, Lt. Dera Natung was a man of versatile character. He did his early education from Government Higher Secondary School, Seppa. He was an Alumni of Sainik School, Imphal, Manipur where he did his Matriculation and passed his Class XIIth Examination from Government Higher Secondary School, Bomdila. Did his graduation with Honours in Political Science from JN College Pasighat in 1984 and Master of Arts in same subject from Punjab University in 1986.

A man of simple living and high thinking, he was quite active since his student’s days as he was the founding President of All Nyishi Students’ Union in 1982 and first General Secretary of All East Kameng District Students’ Union in 1983. After completion of higher education, he served as Programme Officer in All India Radio, Itanagar from 1986 to 1989.

He was elected as Member of Legislative Assembly from 12 Pakke-Kessang ST Assembly Constituency for three consecutive terms since 1989. He held important portfolios as Minister of Sports & Youth Affairs, IPR & Printing, Tourism, Arts & Culture, Social Welfare, Fisheries and Education. He also served as President Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (I) from 1998 to till early 2001.

Deeply engulfed in education of the masses, he had a vision for revamping education scenario in the state. He was an instrument in opening of Science Stream in this College and had keenly nurtured its growth & development. On his noble mission for revamping education as Minister, he was heading towards Bomdila, where he died in a chopper crash near Bhalukpong, on 8th May 2001.

He was an illustrious personality endowed with qualities of great leader, thinker, social worker and above all a good human being. His sudden demise had brought shock web in the state and created a vacuum which could not be easily filled. In recognition to his immense contribution towards the society especially in the field of education, this college (DNGCI) was named after him on 27th May 2001 by the state Government.

Today, we must immolate his ideals and principles based on simplicity, perseverance, dedication and high moral values and character in public life. This will be a befitting tribute to him.
