Higio Aruni conferred Krishna Chandra Gandhi Award 2016

Chief Minister Pema Khandu handed over the Krishna Chandra Gandhi Award 2016 to Higio Aruni, a city-based renowned social activist and educationist in a giving ceremony here at Banquet Hall on Thursday .

Instituted by the Purvottar Janajati Shiksha Samiti in 2007, the Krishna Chandra Gandhi award is conferred every year to eminent persons making remarkable contributions in social and educational sectors in the North Eastern region. Aruni, who is also a sitting Councillor of the Itanagar Municipal Council, was chosen for this prestigious award for 2016.

The Chief Minister while congratulating Aruni for the achievement remembered his association with her since 2013.

He lauded Aruni as one of the pioneers of education in the state capital with her Green Mount School established 25 years ago. He also praised her for taking the challenge to successfully run the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV), which is a residential school offering free education exclusively for girls, at remote Kenbing village in Kra Daadi district yet to be connected by a motorable road.

After graduation, Aruni formed the Hutto Welfare Society in 1990 and started the Green Mount School in the state capital. The former Founding President of Nyishi Nyem Achem, she is known for her contributions in preservation and promotion of indigenous faiths and cultures of Arunachal Pradesh. As a Councillor, she has lead from the front in maintaining hygiene and maintaining sector roads without seeking funds from the government in her ward.

Incidentally, the first ever Krishna Chandra Gandhi Award was also conferred on an Arunachalee – Late Nyong Panyang, a prominent social activist and worker of East Siang district in 2007.
