Former Speaker of Lok Sabha PA Sangma passed away

Former Speaker of Lok Sabha PA Sangma passed away in New Delhi today. 68-year-old Sangma was rushed to Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital after suffering a heart attack. He was declared brought dead by doctors.

The Lok Sabha has been adjourned till March 8 as a mark of respect to Sangma.

“We deeply mourn the passing away of PA Sangma ji, I had learnt how to run Lok Sabha with a smile from him,” Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said.

Sangma was born on September 1, 1947. He was the Speaker of Lok Sabha from 1996 to 1998 and Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990. He, along with Sharad Pawar co-founded the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in 1999 and remained a member of the Lok Sabha for eight terms.

Sangma currently represented the Tura (ST) constituency in the West Garo Hills district in the sixteenth Lok Sabha.
