Encourage cultivation of cash crops- Mein to Officers

Dy Chief Minister Chwona Mein  asked officers to encourage cultivation of cash crops like Tea, Rubber, Ginger, Black Pepper, Turmeric etc. in the district and give awareness training to the farmers and provide technical know-how especially to the small growers of tea and rubber for sustainable agriculture. He asked them to make regular field visits and maintain demonstration plots for imparting training to the farmers.

The Deputy CM had an interaction with the officers of Agriculture, Horticulture, Tea, Rubber & Spice Boards, Fishery and KVK at his residence at Namsai on Monday that lasted late in the evening.

He said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a national target of doubling the farmer’s income by 2022 and to achieve that target we need to gear up. Mein asked the officers to put some extra effort to increase the crop production.  He said that mere distribution of seeds and planting materials to the farmers will not solve the purpose but there must be serious follow up action. He asked them to make field visits the beneficiaries and take photographs for prove.

Dy CM also asked them to encourage the farmers to take up bee keeping and fish farming as it can be a source of additional income for them.  He also said to encourage the youths to take up farming activities too.

He told the district administration to conduct a regular periodical discussion with these officers and to groom the small growers in tea and rubber cultivation. He asked the Spice Board to expedite the process of opening of Auction Centres as the required land was already donated to them and fund has been kept in the state budget for the purpose. He said to the district administration to see that the Auction Centre of Namsai is established with proper planning at the earliest.

He also asked to identify the ban chemicals use in cultivation and asked the district administration to check and ban the harmful chemicals to that are being used in the fields of vegetables and crops as it may leads to health side effects.  He asked them to encourage the farmers to use organic fertilizers and manures in place of chemical fertilize

He urged the departmental officers to work in proper coordination with the district administration to achieve the objective.

He also said to make the KVK at Namsai functional as early as possible and assured to provide fund for electricity and water supply in the newly constructed building.

Parliamentary Secretary for Planning, AR & Training, Chow Zingnu Namchoom, ADC Namsai Vijay Talukdar, Assistant Director of Fisheries, S K Jawal, DHO Sudhir Bhide, Development Officer (Tea Board of India) Manoj Kumar, Deputy Director FTC D Sen, SMS Horticulture (KVK) P K Chandramani Singh and Field Officer, Rubber Board of India Shantanu Das were present in the meeting.
