Eminent litterateur and artist Arun Sarma passes away

At the directive of Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, arrangement is being made to airlift the mortal remains of eminent litterateur and playwright-dramatist, Arun Sarma, who died at Medanta The Medicity at Gurugram in the wee hours today following protracted illness. He died at the age of 85.

After observing of necessary formalities at Medanta The Medicity by the Office of the Resident Commissioner, Assam Bhawan, New Delhi, the mortal remains were brought to AIIMS for embalming before it is being airlifted to Guwahati, where his last rites will be performed with full State honours.

Resident Commissioner, Rwitticka Kalita, who placed a floral wreath on behalf of the Chief Minister, supervised all the arrangements assisted by Deputy Resident Commissioner Joydeep Shukla and Protocol In charge, PK Sarma.

On hearing his sad demise, Chief Minister Sonowal conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul. Condoling his death as a ‘colossal loss to the world of literature and culture’, Sonowal said the vacuum created will be hard to fill.

Recipient of the prestigious Padmashri, Sahitya Akademi, Sangeet Natak Akademi, Assam Valley Literary awards, to name just a few, Arun Sarma enriched the literary and cultural firmament with his outstanding contribution spanning several decades.
