Eastern India’s First Bio-Diesel Locomotive Fuelling Point Inaugurated

As a part of green energy initiative by Indian Railways, Eastern India’s First Bio- Diesel fuelling point has been inaugurated in NF Railway on 24th Feb’2016 at Diesel Loco Shed, New Guwahati. The Bio-Diesel storage and fuelling facility has been provided by Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Guwahati Divisional Office.

As a part of the program, fuelling of Bio-Diesel has been carried out in one shunting Locomotive and successful test run is completed.

Inaugural fuelling has been done by Sri E. Tigga, CME (O&F), NF Railway jointly with Sri Partha Datta, DGM (CS), Indian Oil-AOD State Office, Guwahati in presence of Officials from NF Railway and Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Guwahati.

Implementation of Bio-Diesel in Railways is part of Prime Minister’s National Green Mission bjective and Ministry of Railways’ emphasis on conservation of conventional fossil fuels. Use of Bio- Diesel not only ensures conservation of fossil fuels but also plays vital role in reducing environmental pollution.

As per present Railway Board instructions, Bio-Diesel is to be blended with High Speed Diesel in ratio of 5:95 and fuelling of Locomotives is to be done. At present, NF Railway has a separate Bio diesel fuelling facility with a tankage of 50 KL at Diesel Loco Shed, New Guwahati. This facility is planned to be extended in other locations in NF Railway in next six months.

The Diesel Loco Shed, New Guwahati is pioneer in taking green initiatives. The shed is already a Pollution Control Board Certified zero-effluent discharge shed with the treated water being utilized for plantation and other internal purpose. The Bio-Gas plant for Canteen, Solar Water Heater in Hostel and Solar lighting in shed are also under process to be installed in the shed.
