Dy CM Chowna Mein Convenes Meeting for Conduct of POI PEE MAU Festival

The Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Meeting recently convened a meeting which was held at the Deputy Commissioner Namsai office to review and chalk out the programmes of the ensuing Tai community new year festival Poi Pee Mau-2111 scheduled from 29 November to 1 December.

Deputy Commissioner Namsai R.K.Sharma chaired the meeting attended by the other two legislators of the district as well as the Tai Khampti community, Chow Tewa Mein Parliamentary Secretary Environment and Forests and Chow Zingnu Namchoom, Parliamentary Secretary Planning besides the Heads of Departments and the celebration committee members.

The Dy CM in his address said that the festival has gained popularity over the years and as such the celebration must not be merely for merry making but a platform to showcase the essence of Tai Khamti culture and heritage so that it attracts tourists. The main emphasis of this year’s celebration will be to evolve it into a major tourism festival of the state.

With the dissemination of the festival in various media, the keeness among tourists has also increased and the upcoming edition of the festival is poised to see flow of tourists. Thai delegation will also join in the celebration besides the delegations from other Tai groups in North East India informed Chow Phatra Longchot, President of the celebration committee.

The Poi Pee Mau is celebrated every year as a new year festival as per the Tai Khamti lunar calendar. This year the theme of the festival is ‘No To Drugs’ which is aimed at sending an appeal to shun drug abuse and renew the vibrancy of the Tai Khamti society.
