Chowna Mein inspected Flood Protection Works in Mahadevpur

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on his arrival to Namsai today inspected on-going flood protection works over Noa-Dihing River at New Silatoo in Mahadevpur to take stock of the progress of work. The Engineers of Water Resource Department demonstrate the installation of Steel Sheet Piles walls carried out along the river bank of Noa-Dihing to the dignitaries.

Chowna Mein inspected Flood Protection Works in MahadevpurDy CM Mein enquires on the progress of flood protection works at Deobeel (Namsai), Philobari, Mahaloni, Woisali, Dirak Miri, Rajabeel villages under Lekang circle. He urged the executing agency and engineers present in the site to expedite the works and complete the flood protection works over Noa-Dihing River by February next.

He asked the Deputy Commissioner to hold coordination meeting with the Panchayat and public leaders of the area and to see that there is no disturbance from any quarter in the smooth execution of the work to the executing agencies. He further asked the district administration to set up temporary police camp at the site for security and protection of engineers and technical staffs. He said to act tough against those who try to create disturbance at the work site and asked the Deputy Commissioner to book those creating nuisance under appropriate section of law.

Executive Engineer, WRD Jaleeng Mannou informed that procurement of sheet piles is in progress, but Vibro hammer and heavy machineries has already reached the work site. The trial work and construction of coffer dams started and the back filling cum embankment is under progress. While works like approached roads, c/o coffer dam and collection of boulder and procurement of sausage wire is in progress and would be completed soon, he added.

He assured DCM that the department will carry out the work as demonstrated in New Silatoo and would complete the work by February end. The sheet piles provide the best solutions for building and reinforcing flood ditches, dikes etc. Sheet pile walls offer good seepage resistance and work perfectly and provide optimal solutions against floods. Sheet piles can be installed in a short amount of time as compared to other flood protection systems, he informed.

He further briefed about installing of sheet pile walls considered to be environmentally friendly and constructive solution for flood control. The implementation and installation of steel sheet pile walls has been popular in other places as it provides a safe and cost-effective solution, he said.

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner R. K. Sharma and team of officers and engineers from various Heads of Departments.

It is pertinent to inform that during the last monsoon, the whole of Mahadevpur town was inundated by flood water of River Noa-Dihing and many people were rendered homeless due to sudden change of course of the river.

Later, Deputy Chief Minister also attended a public meeting at New Silatoo.
