AWWA celebrates 51st raising day at Gajraj Corps Headquarter

The Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA), a non profit NGO, working under the aegis of Indian Army celebrated its 51st raising day at the Gajraj Corps Headquarter here with fervour and sobriety, rededicating itself to the cause of being the pillar of support for lakhs of wives of the nation’s soldiers and their families.

The celebrations conducted all over the country, were spread over last two days, 22nd and 23rd August, at the Tezpur Chapter. Mrs Annupma Bedi, Zonal President AWWA unveiled a bilingual information booklet on various schemes, projects, employment assistance programmes, financial assistance grants and other benefits and entitlements for widows and ‘Veer Naris’. They were also felicitated as a token of gratitude for their invaluable sacrifice.

Raised on 23 August 1966, AWWA works on empowering the wives of serving and retired Army persons through a slew of endeavours which include organised skill development, health and hygiene and awareness campaigns among others. Aptly referred to as Veer Naris, the widows of the martyrs from the Army have an institutional support mechanism in AWWA. Socio economic empowerment of the women and children is an integral part of AWWA activities.

On the occasion, various welfare measures were also organised which included spot registration and awareness of employment opportunities by representatives of Army Placement Node, Guwahati, medical check up camp by the Army Base Hospital and resolution of pension related problems by Army Station Headquarters, Tezpur and Zila Sainik Welfare Board, Guwahati. The Zonal President assured the Veer Naris, widows and wives of retired army persons that their concerns and issues faced by them would be followed up in right earnest.

 Towards playing its part in the growing challenges of climate change, growing population and rapid industrialization, AWWA will observe this year as a ‘Year of Water Conservation’. On this theme, a splendid function was organised, highlighting the need for consciousness in water conservation for the sake of coming generations. The event culminated with inspirational performances in gymnastics, lively Bihu and felicitation of outstanding achievers for their contribution in various welfare activities and meritorious students of Army Public School, Tezpur by Mrs Annupma Bedi.
