In the highest ever cash seizure so far by the ECI appointed  agencies at one go, the Flying Squads seized a whopping amount of Rs 1.80 crore in Pasighat on Tuesday night, just hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public rally at the oldest town of Arunachal Pradesh.

Incidentally, Pasighat falls under the Arunachal East Parliamentary Constituency, which is being contested by State BJP president Tapir Gao. The State goes to Lok Sabha and Assembly polls simultaneously on April 11.

“The Rs 1.80 crore seized by the flying squad team at Pasighat has already been referred to the Income Tax Department,” informed State’s Additional Chief Electoral Officer Kanki Darang on Wednesday evening, while dodging the question whether any case was registered in this connection.

He also revealed that till date, the total unaccounted cash seized in Arunachal Pradesh since model code of conduct (MCC) came into force has increased to Rs 5,50,49,570.

Giving details about the latest seizure, Darang informed that the Flying Squad stationed at Pasighat acting on a tip-off recovered the cash of Rs 1.80 crore from two parked vehicles – one, bearing registration number AR-09B 3797 (Scorpio) and another white coloured Fortuner bearing Regn No. AR-01K 0009 – at the premises of Siang Guest House, Pasighat last night at about 9.30 pm.

He told that as per information available with him, Rs one crore was found from the vehicle (AR-09B 3797) owned by BJP candidate from Mebo constituency Dangi Perme’s son Christopher Perme and the remaining amount of Rs 80 lakh from the Fortuner, which is registered under the Deputy Secretary, Transport, Govt of Arunachal Pradesh. The amount was claimed to be of ex-MLA Ralom Borang.

Reportedly, the second vehicle (AR-01K 0009) was part of Chief Minister Pema Khandu’s convoy.

Asked whether it was a lapse on the part of security agencies that too ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Pasighat, the Addl CEO, while informing that the flying squads, static surveillance teams and police remain deployed in all expenditure sensitive districts to strictly enforce the MCC, said accordingly action is taken against the violators.

“There should be equal playing ground for all the candidates, their parties and independents as well and nobody should use money and muscle power to influence the poll process, the Addl CEO added.

So far eight cases have been forwarded to IT for further investigation.

Darang also informed that the ex-MLA Borang, in his letter addressed to the Nodal Officer, Flying Squad team, claimed that the cash of Rs 80 lakh seized from the while coloured Fortuner on April 2 belonged to him.

“Part of this money I borrowed from my relatives and part of it was my own. The money was kept with me to buy (a) piece of land at Mariyang, Upper Siang district, payment for which was planned to be finalised on 07.04.19,” he claimed while requesting the Flying Squad to return his money “on urgent basis”.

Likewise, claiming ownership of both the Mahindra Scorpio vehicle and the money (Rs 1 crore) seized from it, Christopher wrote to the NO, Flying Squad Team: “Part of the money I have earned by disposing traditional beads (valuable jwellery) to two persons sometime in the month of January 2019 and I had kept this money as I am constructing two structures (house at Ngopok and RCC at Banskota).

Some parts I had borrowed from my relatives for investing in some contract works undertaken by my friends,” Christopher wrote. Pleading that the said money be returned to him, he further claimed, “As there was lot of commotion and threats from unknown mobs I had sneaked away being scared.”
