Arunachal: people in Kongkul and New Borguli village carried out flood control work on their own

Many Porcupine spurs were erected by the Kongkul village by using trees, wood, bamboos and other items on voluntary self help basis.

The people of Kongkul and New Borguli village under Namsing circle, some 45 KM from here has carried out a major flood control work on traditional style by making procupine spurs and others on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Many Porcupine spurs were erected by the Kongkul village by using trees, wood, bamboos and other items on voluntary self help basis without waiting government funded schemes. The spurs were constructed and raised along the major river current striking points considering the possible repellent of river current at the time of flash flood.

The same kind of self help voluntary flood protection works were erected by people of New Borguli village by engaging JCBs, Tractors and others today.

It is worth mentioning here that the massive flash flood over mighty river Siang during last year had caused innumerable damages of agricultural lands besides washing away of houses etc due to massive soil erosion.

While people of this region of East Siang District including parts of Assam in the lower course suffered lots due to which state government had announced a sum of Rs. 35 Cr for construction of flood control along left bank side of Siang river to safe and protect the villages, but the funds are yet to be released or processed due to model code of conduct in placed.

To take stock of the situation and to see the overall progress of works as a part of encouragement to the villagers, Dy. Commissioner East Siang, Dr. Kinny Singh along with SEEANG foundation Secretary General, Group Captain retired, Mohonto Panging, DDMO, G. Tsumo, EE WRD, Er. T. Jamoh, ABK East Siang Gen. Secy. Talut Siram and others visited the working sites in the Siang river bank on Tuesday.

DC appreciated and admired the villagers of Kongkul and said that, no effort is small and such self help will go a long way in securing the village and its lands from Siang river.

Mohonto Panging also said that, funding help from government is yet to come, but SEEANG committee which is looking after the flood protection works along left bank side will continue constructing small spurs which will help in reducing the erosion pressure.

As per him CM Pema Khandu has said that, the funding process is being cleared from DoNER Ministry through Chief Secretary which is likely to be released anytime soon after MCC is over. Khandu has also lauded the efforts of the villagers, informed Panging.
