Arunachal :  Losar Celebrated at Itanagar

Despite the intermittent downpour all day long in Arunachal, the Buddhist community in Itanagar today celebrated the Losar festival at the Nyokum Lapang ground here with much enthusiasm and traditional fervour.

The Losar festival this year is being celebrated as the silver jubilee by the Itanagar Buddhist Cultural Society (IBCS). The Losar festival, which is celebrated as the New Year by the Buddhist community has entered into 2145 Earth Dog year as per the Buddhist calendar.

Various cultural presentations from across the state, and from Bhutan and from the Gorkha community, community feast, prize distribution etc marked today’s celebration.

Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Education minister Honchum Ngandam appealed to the gathering to promote and preserve their tradition and culture, especially their dialect.

Stating that learning other languages is for convenience only, Ngandam said that one should be able to speak their mother tongue also through which their identity is established.

Adding that loss of culture is not only limited to loss of identity but loss of existence too, Ngandam said that the state government is committed towards protecting and promoting the culture and tradition of the tribes in the state through the Art and Culture department and the department of Faith and Culture.

Itanagar capital complex deputy commissioner Prince Dhawan in his address as the guest of honour, urged one and all to take resolution for cleanliness and to retain the Open defecation free status.
