Arunachal: Flourishing opium at Medo

Medo, a tiny town in Lohit district is witnessed with first season of flourishing Opium cultivation. This area has dubious distinction of producing large – scale of opium. This picture (opium thriving garden) is captured at Tissu village of Medo which is closely attached to the Highway Parsuram – Chowkham road and is hardly 1 Km in distance from the highway.

The villagers are reluctant to quit despite much sensitisation and awareness camps carried out in the past. In spite of the incredible effort of Narcotic Bureau in support of district administration to launch drive on destruction of opium cultivation every year their un exhausted attempt hardly mattered to the gullible cultivators.

Chow Tewa Mein MLA Chowkham – Wakro Constituency claimed in the Drugs – De addiction camp held at Tamla – DU hall on 30th Dec 2018 that the villagers of Medo are acquiring vast land for ideal growing of Opium and openly selling at the Medo garden which is illegal and unfortunate, the Mein rued.

The vast forest reserve including Turung Reserve Forest, Kamfai Anchal Reserve Forest and part of Kamlang Reserve Forest and its hinterland have been brought under its cultivation.

The government in a good deal launched several alertness camps for alternative livelihood. The most vital one has been the ongoing alternative means of livelihood under State Area Development Agency (SADA) in which Stevia and Lemon crops are taken up.
