Arunachal: Flash flood, Landslide leave 3 dead, 3 missing in Itanagar

Flash floods and landslides caused by heavy rain on Friday in Arunachal have left 3 people dead and 3 others missing in Itanagar and Naharlagun.

Due to heavy rain, major disasters were reported from many places in the Capital Complex on Friday. The District Administration along with the Police, NDRF, SDRF, line departments etc swung into action to carry out the rescue operation.

The Deputy Commissioner Capital Complex Prince Dhawan along with DDMO Moromi Dodum Sonam visited all the incident areas and met with the victims.

Many schools in the Capital Complex have been designated as temporary relief shelter and the DC has appealed all the denizens of the Capital Complex who reside in low lying areas or disaster prone areas to shift to their nearest relief shelter in case of heavy rain to avert any kind of disaster.

The DC also informed that all the relief materials including blankets, vessels, utensils, etc would be provided by the District Administration. All the places where there were blockades like Lobi, Donyi Polo road etc were cleared and opened for traffic.

However, around 18 houses were fully washed away and 37 houses were damaged partially in Modirijo. The Approach road to Modirijo was also washed away and around 4.30 am, 3 members of a family were drowned and only the body of the son could be retrieved. The victims were Mary Beyong  ( 32 ) Pungpi Beyong  (10) and Kojom beyong ( 3 years ) whose dead body was retrieved near Oju Mission Naharlagun and handed over to family members.

In Donyi Polo Colony, 9 houses were fully damaged and 4 were partially damaged and half of the Culvert was washed away. Further, the flood due to continuous raining also washed away one i20 car, one i10 car and one Maruti 800 along with three bikes.

In press colony/ kurung pare 2 houses were fully damaged and 17 houses were partially damaged.

The hanging bridge of Press colony was also washed away.

One house was also fully damaged near Rajiv Gandhi Government Polytechnic College.

The culvert of Senki view near water treatment plant was also washed away.

The flood also swept away three people, out of which two people namely Taring yaha( 40 yrs) and Rake Naku-30 years could be saved and are currently undergoing treatment. The third one Mohan Bahadur Chetry ( 50 yrs) could not be saved and his body was retrieved from Nirjuli.

One Yadi Rigio from Modirijo was also swept away, rescued but sadly she succumbed to her injuries. Her husbans Sh. Rigio Tugung is also reported to be missing.

In lobby area, one Hoúse was fully damaged and 3 houses damaged partially.

The DC informed that rescue operation closed at 5.30pm today and will resume in the morning tomorrow.

The DC has also issued an order directing the people residing in vulnerable areas to vacate such vulnerable areas to safer locations or temporary relief camp identified to avoid loss of lives and properties. The order also stated that those deliberately staying in landslide areas or water path areas along the rivers, nallahs, streams and hill side at their own risk shall not be entitled to claim any compensation whatsoever in future. The order has also mentioned the list of vulnerable areas identified and safe shelter.

The DC also informed that as per the information provided by EE PHE& WS Division the entire water supply of Itanagar, Naharlagun and Nirjuli township has been washed away disrupting drinking water supply of the township and the restoration work would take around a week. some portions of water supply are washed away especially of Senki view area.

The man and machineries have already been deployed to take up the restoration work wherever possible, informed the DC. He further informed that water tanker shall be pressed into services to supply drinking water wherever required and has appealed the denizens to bear with the inconvenience till the restoration work is carried out.

The DC stressed that we cannot save ourselves from Mother Nature’s fury, however we can avoid manmade disasters through various precautionary measures and appealed the denizens to refrain from building houses near the rivers, streams , low lying areas etc. He further stressed that people should not do earth cutting and dumping during monsoons.

He has also appealed the denizens to remain alert as disasters doesn’t come knocking.

He further informed that toll free no 1077 of Emergency Operating Centre (EOC) could be contacted in case of any eventuality.The EE PHE& WS  informed that some of the areas that would be affected with water supply are Itanagar, Senki park, Senki view, Donyi Polo colony, Panchali, Tagin colony, mowb II , lobi, kime Paka, papu nallah area, Naharlagun etc and in these areas alternate arrangement of water would be provided through rationed water supply from Itanagar PH-II poma water supply  and through  tanker that would be  supplied everyday from 6.30 am to 10.30 am and from 4.30 pm to 8.30pm
