Arunachal: CHF celebrates World Honey Bee Day

College of Horticulture and Forestry (CHF ) , Central Agricultural University, Pasighat,   Celebrated World Honey Bee day with the theme ‘Save Honey Bees under sponsorship of National Bee Board, Department of Agriculture, Cooperation & Farmer Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India, funded under Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH).

The occasion was marked with creation of awareness on “Saving honeybees” and conclusion of Seven days (14-20th May, 2019) within the State Training programme on “Scientific Beekeeping for the farmers/Beekeepers of East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh”.

In his speech, Chief Guest Dr. B.N. Hazarika, Dean, College of Horticulture and Forestry, Central Agricultural University, Pasighat, A.P., highlighted the significance and importance of Honeybees and Beekeeping in A.P. under Integrated farming System for fulfilling the vision and mission of PM Narendra Modi in doubling of farmers’ income by 2022.

He also briefed the participants about the economic significance of adopting scientific bee keeping in increasing crop production and productivity in Arunachal Pradesh. Dr. Hazarika also distributed Bee boxes and certificates to progressive farmers and successful participants of seven days training programme, he was of view that KVK and college should act as lighthouse of scientific technologies for farmers of the region.

Guest of Honour Dr. D.B. Ahuja, Head Department of Plant Protection, College of Horticulture and Forestry, Central Agricultural University, Pasighat, A.P., briefed the farmers about the significance of World Honey Bee day and current scenario of scientific beekeeping in NEH region.

He also encouraged the farmers to adopt scientific beekeeping and grow more flowering crop and integrate bee keeping with agricultural and horticultural crops to generate extra and sustainable income through bee pollination and honey along with its byproducts. He also appreciated the efforts of the organisers from College of Horticulture and Forestry, CAU, Pasighat for organising such programmes for creating awareness among farmers for saving honeybees among the beekeepers and farmers of the district.

Dr. Mahesh Pathak, Sr. Scientist & Head, KVK East Siang, CAU, Pasighat and Course Director of training programme apprised the chief guest and other guests about the different activities carried out in the district to encourage farmers to adopt the scientific beekeeping and create awareness about saving honeybees in the district.

Resource persons from KVK East Siang and CHF Pasighat also emphasized on integration of scientific bee keeping with crop production for improving socio-economic condition of the farmers.

The beekeepers, farmers and trainees also expressed their views on scientific beekeeping and how to save honeybees in prevailing conditions. Twenty five progressive farmers and beekeepers from Sille village of East Siang district attended the training programme.
