Arunachal: Chakat Aboh consensus candidate for Khonsa West Assembly bypoll

Khandu informed that as Chakat Aboh is a consensus candidate of five political parties, she will file nomination as an Independent candidate for the October 21 bye-polls.

Chakat Aboh, wife of late Tirong Aboh, has been unanimously picked up by the ruling BJP, opposition Congress and three other parties as a candidate for the upcoming Khonsa West Assembly bypoll in Arunachal Pradesh.

Addressing a joint press conference here after chairing a meeting with representatives from BJP, Opposition Congress, National People’s Party (NPP), Janata Dal (United) and People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA), Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced the name of Chakat Aboh as consensus candidate of all five political parties for the Khonsa West Assembly bypoll.

“Today, detailed discussions were held with representatives of five political parties to field a consensus candidate for Khonsa West Assembly bye-elections. All parties kept their views and a conclusion was drawn to field a consensus candidate. We have decided to field Chakat Aboh, wife of late Tirong Aboh,’’ the CM said.

Khandu informed that as Chakat Aboh is a consensus candidate of five political parties, she will file nomination as an Independent candidate for the October 21 bye-polls.

Asked if any candidate from any other political party files nomination papers, the CM said, “We (the five parties) will jointly fight the bye-polls in the spirit of Team Arunachal.”

The CM said that today’s all-party meeting was called in view of his assurance in the first session of Seventh Legislative Assembly to hold discussion on consensus candidate for the Khonsa West seat after declaration of bye-elections.

Arunachal Congress president and former Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, who was also present in the press meet, said, “All the parties today decided to field a consensus candidate. We have sympathy for family members of late Tirong Aboh. So, we have decided to field Chakat Aboh and from Indian National Congress (INC) we have given our support to her.’’

BJP state president Tapir Gao said, “In the history of Arunachal politics this is for the first time that a collective decision has been taken to field a consensus candidate through a consensus decision by majority of political party of state. We will all together help Chakat Aboh win the Khonsa West seat.”

Chakat Aboh, who was also present, hailed the decision and thanked all the five parties for reposing their trust on her.

NPP Legislature Party leader Mutchu Mithi while said it was a historic decision. He said that the decision shown toward humanity and the national president Conrad Sangma have also approved for the same. He also lauded the decision and support of all political party in this regard.

Among other representatives of the parties who were present in the presser were PPA chairman Kamen Ringu, NPP state vice-president Nima Sangey Saling and Arunachal JD (U) president Ruhi Tagung.

Till date, no one has nomination for the Khonsa West bye-polls, according to election office source here. The last date for filing of nominations is September 30.

The bye-elections to Khonsa West seat was necessitated after the NPP nominee Tirong Aboh, who was killed in an ambush on May 21, two days before the announcement of 2019 Assembly polls results, got re-elected from the said seat.
